The Adomi Bridge is a suspension bridge that, on rare occasions, rattles and swings when heavy-duty trucks cross it. The bridge is a steel arch with rubber expansion joints at both ends. This keeps activities from the lake or the land from affecting the bridge, and vice versa.
History of the Adomi Bridge
Historically, a Ferry was placed on the Volta river to serve as a means of transport connection between the Eastern region and the Volta region. The indigenous people also used a raft as a means of transport in most cases. In 1953, decisions were made to replace the raft and ferry with a bridge as there were dangers, delays and overloads.
In 1955, under the governorship of Sir Charles Noble Arden Clark in the then Gold Coast (Ghana presently), instructed the construction of the bridge. Sir William Halcrow and partners made the design while construction was also done by Dorman Long Bridge and Engineering Limited all from the United Kingdom.
Construction ended in 1957 and a year after independence, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah , Ghana’s first president commissioned the bridge at Atimpoku in the Eastern region.
The Adomi bridge was then connecting to a village after the river called ‘’Adome’’ in the Volta region hence being named after the bridge but due to modification and pronunciation , it has finally been changed to ‘’Adomi’’ bridge. History also has it that the late Flight Jerry John Rawlings flew a jet fighter under the bridge in 1979.
Under the Adomi bridge is the volta river which has lots of aquatic lives different species of fishes. Pleasure is here as people cruise on the river for fun and relaxation at the beautiful hotels along the banks. You can also visit here to catch a glimpse of nature on the river.
