The Europeans constructed their forts along the coast of the then Gold Coast (now Ghana) and James fort and Ussher forts are among the forts built on the coast of Accra.

Around the 17th century, Jamestown loomed as a community around the James fort and Ussher fort which were built by the British and the Dutch respectively during the colonial era. It was named after James, the Duke of York.

Currently, Jamestown is the domicile for the Ga people and the primary activity here is fishing since it’s a town lying along the coast.

Jamestown being part of the hub of slave trade in the colonial era has a lot of facts I deem worth sharing.

Jamestown became the capital of the Gold Coast in 1876 after the capital was moved from Cape Coast.

The Jamestown light house is a tower of 92 feet above sea level. It is painted in red and white horizontal band strips with lantern on top which overlooked the harbor at night. It also served as a signal to arriving ships at the Gold Coast.

The first highway to be constructed in the Gold Coast was constructed in the Jamestown. The Europeans constructed this highway to serve as a transport connection or network between their colonies in the West Africa. The road connecting to the west leads to Ivory Coast and that of the east also leads to Nigeria, where their trading activities occurred.

The first hotel to be built in the Gold Coast can also be found here in Jamestown. Sea View hotel was built directly opposite the Jamestown light to provide accommodation and lodging to the colonial masters. This is where the Queen of England lodged in 1961 when she visited Ghana. Jamestown is popularly known for the celebration of the Chale Wote Street Art Festival. A festival celebrated annually to brings arts, music, dance and performances on the streets of Jamestown. The festival includes street paintings, photo exhibitions, street boxing and much more to cultivate wide audience for West African arts.
