Among the various top and most visited tourist sites in Ghana, Bisa Abrewa (Aberwa) is another nicest attraction in the Western Region of Ghana that is fully packed with lots of information through sculptural representation.  

A popular quote from Martin Luther King Jr goes ‘’ We are not makers of history, but we are made by history’’. The Bisa Abrewa (Aberwa) Museum is created to serve as one of the largest hub of sculpture works made in clay, wood, cement, paintings and photographs of personalities whose sacrifices have shaped African history, both within the continent and the diaspora.

Though unpopular, the museum is gradually seeing limelight for the intensity of information from the past represented through sculpture works.

Bisa Abrewa is an Akan language meaning ask the old lady. Old people in Ghanaian culture are deemed as wise, experienced and advisors whom we go for counseling and advice to live our lives. It is in this regard that Mr Kwaw Ansah, one of Africa’s most respected award-winning filmmakers, founder and first Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TV Africa Limited, dedicated to preserving the history of the Black Race, promoting African values and celebrating Pan African heroes.

The museum which has about 2,200 artefacts, sculptural pieces and photographs of heroes of the African struggle and the African American Civil Rights Movement as well as other Black personalities in the French, Portuguese and Spanish Caribbean, was officially inaugurated on July 28, 2019.

However the collection of artifacts started about 40 years ago with the main purpose of allowing generations of Ghanaian to know more about the past so that they could make informed decisions. The museum also contains documented stories of distinguished personalities such as Dr Esther Ocloo, Paa Grant, Nana Kobina Nketsia IV, A.S. Blay and Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

The museum can be located in the Sekondi/Takoradi at the township of Nkontompo near the Efia Nkwanta Hospital in the Western Region. It is about 220 Km from Accra and an hour and 45 minute from the Cape Coast Castle.
