History of Shai Hills Resource Reserve

The Shai Hills Resource Reserve is a stretch of forest reserve land of area 51 square kilometers which was formally occupied and domicile to the Shai people as history says. It was established and declared a forest reserve after the British ejected the Shai people and made it a protectorate.

  The Shai Hills Resource Reserve just like Kakum national park is a fenced forest reserved with wildlife covered by Savannah plains with beautiful and historical mountains. Popularly known for baboons and sanctuary of monkeys, it also contains different species of birds, mammals, reptiles, bats just to mention few.

The baboons and monkeys are mostly found along the front gate and trooping along the highway early in the morning to make ends meet. It is very fun and intriguing but sometimes they are very bellicose and can snatch your personal belongings left idle.

There are friendly live pythons one can conquer fears with by touching and playing with, but please bear in mind that snakes are animal and can be very dangerous at any time.

With a warmly welcome at the reception, there are tour guides who first take tourists to the notice board where they are giving the outline and a brief information about the facility and then proceed to the revenue office for payment of the entry fees. Entry fee for an hour is a small amount of cedis and any additional hour attracts a 5 cedis added.

There are many optional touring packages one can choose from depending on the tourist’s preference. The sightseeing can be categorized into hiking, touring with a rented bicycle and a vehicle. Each comes with its cost per hour.

There is the Mogo hills which is an isolated hills which serve as a home of baboons, green monkeys and birds. It served as a place where the Shai people use to grind their food stuffs during their hideout in the caves during the slave trade. The hills offers a terrific vantage points, from there one can spot any arriving visitor from far.

The Sayu Cave is also a cave in the Shai hills resource reserve. Which served as a home to the people of Krobo and also provided security to them when the slave trade was very rampant in then Gold Coast.

The Shai Hills Museum has library of books about wildlife reserve, photo galleries, skins of dead animal and fossils of plants and animals preserved for research purposes. There is also a media studio in the library filled with gadgets such as drones, cameras and recording devices for filming and taking documentaries about wildlife reserve.

Location of the Shai Hills Resource Reserve

Direction to the Shai Hils Resource Reserve is in a town called Doryumu in the Shai Osudoku district of the Greater Accra region of Ghana. It is 40 km distance from Tema and and about 47 km from Accra along the Accra-Akosombo highway.

Entrance fee to Shai Hills Resource Reserve

Entry fees or prices for the Shai hills resource reserve are charged hourly and attracts additional fees per hour. The prices differ from young to adult Ghanaians and Foreigners.

Working hours

The best time to visit the Shai hills resource is early in the morning. The baboons troop in front of the gate and along the roads to make ends meet. To catch the excitement and the amusement seeing them, early morning visit is recommended. However, the normal working hours is between 8:00am to 5:00pm but one can contact and make reservations for camping and hikes.
