History of Mountain Afadjato

Historically, the indigenes who are Ewes migrated from Togo and arriving at their present home in the Volta region of Ghana, they were battling with wild animals that were normally attacking newly born babies in the village. With a little mind taken off the babies, these wild animals would come and attack them and in some extent of killing them.

As a way of driving them away, it resulted in a battle which got some of the wild animals killed and some running to the mountain side. They chased the wild animals to the mountains and came across an itching plant which prevented them from getting to the mountains to battle the wild animals since they were not wearing clothes.

The futility of the battle between the people and the itching plant got them returned home and broke the news of their omen on the mountains. In the Ewe language, spoken by the Voltarians in Ghana, ‘’Afar’’ means War, ‘’Dja’’ means Plant and ‘’To’’ also means Mountain. So the War with the Plant becomes ‘’Afadja’’ and the mountain ‘’To’’ hence, Afadjato being the derived name of the mountain.
